Word: Line numbering

January 5, 2009

If the document you’re working on will go through several review cycles, then line numbering can be useful in making sure that everyone is referring to the same place when discussing changes. You can turn on line numbering at any point in the document’s life cycle, and turn it off as easily. Line numbering does not make changes to the page layout or push words and sentences onto following pages.

Here’s how to turn on line numbering in both Word 2003 and Word 2007.

Word 2003

  1. From the menu select File > Page Setup.
  2. Go to the Layout tab.
  3. Click Line Numbers to open the Line Numbers window.
  4. Select your preferences, then click OK to exit all windows.
