Subscribe to this blog via email

June 9, 2010

Jane from Tasmania (yes, that’s her real name!) emailed me in frustration the other day. It seems she subscribes to this blog via email. She’d forwarded one of the ‘new post’ emails to a friend who had clicked the Unsubscribe link in the email and unsubscribed Jane!

I won’t go into the etiquette associated with her friend’s actions! ;-) Suffice to say, Jane didn’t know how to resubscribe.

Now, I don’t subscribe to my own blog so I wasn’t even aware that those who do subscribe get an email whenever I publish a new post. And as far as other blogs go, I subscribe to them via a feed reader, not email.

Jane had laid down the gauntlet of a challenge to me. How could she resubscribe and get the emails?

I looked at these options:

  • Entries (RSS) link at the bottom of every blog post — this link may be appropriate for a feed reader, but I couldn’t see any option for emails.
  • Outlook 2003 — nothing. I have Outlook 2007 on another computer, but I rarely use it as it’s not on my main production machine.
  • Outlook 2007 — aha! After I fired up the other computer, I checked the Outlook 2007 Help and found the instructions below (I’ve modified them slightly).

Add an RSS Feed through Outlook 2007:

  1. Find the feed’s URL (for my blog, it’s https://cybertext.wordpress.com/feed/, which you can get by right-clicking on the Entries (RSS) link at the bottom of any post, the copying the location to the clipboard).
  2. On the Tools menu, click Account Settings.
  3. On the RSS Feeds tab, click New.
  4. In the New RSS Feed dialog box, type or press CTRL+V to paste the URL of the RSS Feed. For example, http://www.example.com/feed/main.xml.
  5. Click Add.
  6. Click OK.

An easier way!

Meantime, Jane discovered that if she opened any blog post, there’s an option to subscribe to the blog via email (who knew!). That sounds a much simpler option!

So, between us Jane and I solved her problem. And I got a new troubleshooting blog topic out of it!
