Enchanted visuals

If you’re interested in how visual and informational elements can be made more usable on websites, go and read this article: http://www.usabilityinstitute.com/beforeandafter/mi_books.htm

Even if you don’t read the preamble, take a look at the ‘before and after’ images of how one person has redesigned several familiar websites, all with the aim of making the information more understandable and usable to the audience.

As an example, here’s the ‘before and after’ of a popular book website (click the images to view them full size):

In the ‘after’, notice the amount of information you can find without clicking through to another page — all in almost the same amount of screen real estate as the ‘before’ (I like the little counters below the star grades too — tiny, but effective):
