Word: Taking back control

December 4, 2009

One of Word’s nicest features is how it automates stuff — this automation is also one of Word’s greatest annoyances!

Do any of these Word ‘features’ annoy you?

  • You get a hyperlink when you type a web address
  • Some text (e.g. ‘Monday’) is capitalized as you’re typing it
  • You type ‘(c)’ after ‘(a)’ and ‘(b)’ and get a copyright symbol instead
  • You get a superscripted ‘nd’ when you type ‘2nd’
  • Your ‘1/2’ becomes a fraction
  • Your straight quote marks become curly quotes
  • You try to select a few characters, but Word wants to select the entire word
  • You type three or more dashes and get a border
  • You start a list with ‘1.’ and Word automatically starts the next line with ‘2.’
  • You type a hyphen but it becomes an en or em dash.

If any of these things annoy you, check out Jody Gilbert’s article at TechRepublic — 10 annoying Word features (and how to turn them off) — for details on how to turn off each of these and take control back from Word.
