Windows: Turn off FilterKeys

October 16, 2008

My husband inadvertently hit some keyboard combination and he got a strange beep, a brief popup message, and a system tray icon for something called FilterKeys. It’s a Microsoft Windows and Vista function for accessibility.

He turned it off under Control Panel > Accessibility Options, but he was still getting some funny things happening whenever he tried to select any text in his document.

The solution to that was to hold down the two Shift keys simultaneously (one on each side of the keyboard).

I found that trick here: http://www.ofzenandcomputing.com/zanswers/463
